Hello loves! It’s been a while since I’ve done some travel writing. I leave for my next trip in a week (a cruise to the Bahamas!), but in the meantime, I thought I would share some of my European favorites.
Europe possesses an allure like no other, and it’s difficult for any traveler to resist its intoxicating charms. The continent is home to so many different cultures, religions, languages, and ways of life. With so much variety, it’s no surprise that backpackers try to cram in as many countries as possible when they visit.
While there are dozens of brilliant places to visit across Europe, some stick out more than others. Here are five European destinations that should rank highly on everybody’s ‘to do’ list.
France
Paris, France, is known as the city of Love, and everyone should rank visiting Paris as a high priority on their travelling bucket list. Paris isn’t only a place of immense romance, though. It’s also one of the fashion capitals of the world, and has numerous tourist attractions. The Eiffel Tower obviously stands out at the top of this list, but the Arc de Triomphe and Seine River are well worth a look too.
Interestingly, Paris is also home to Europe’s biggest Disney attraction. No matter how old you get, you’re never too old to spend a few days with Mickey Mouse and Co.
If you are looking for a break from big city life, you can also take a day trip to the Palace of Versailles and experience life as the royals do. The Palace is still in use today for political events and has remarkable gardens.
Finally, visit the slightly controversial wine country in Bordeaux, France, which is often called the most non-French region in France. Either way, the wine is divine!
Italy
Italy is one of my favorite places in the world. It is truly a special country, full of warm people, insanely delicious food, and is a country that every traveler should visit at least once in his or her lifetime.
The most popular places to visit in Italy are Rome, Florence, Venice, and of course the Amalfi Coast. You must see the Vatican City in Rome for stunning art work and religious influences. The canals of Venice are just as breathtaking as the movies make them out to be, and full of romance and beauty. Florence is a city you could spend days in just wandering the streets, but don’t forget to stop by the Duomo for breathtaking views. The Amalfi Coast could be a separate trip in itself, with its wonderful beaches and southern Italian distinctions.
In addition to these usual stops in Italy, there are also various other luxury Italian resorts that are just waiting to be explored. A villa in Italy? Yes, please.
Oh, and the food… the FOOD…I can’t even do it justice, you will just have to taste it for yourself!
Poland
One of the great things about any holiday is that you get to explore different cultures and soak in moments of history. No place in the world offers this better than Poland.
Visiting Auschwitz is a truly moving experience. I’ll concede that it’s chilling to look around those concentration camps. But it’s also an unforgettable one, that gives you a better understanding of those tragic years and appreciate how special human life is. Even if history isn’t usually your cup of tea, this trip will change you forever.
Meanwhile, the nearby city of Krakow is a delightful vacation spot, with its historic architecture and St. Mary’s Basilica. Spend a few days here with an excursion to Auschwitz, and you won’t be disappointed.
United Kingdom
United Kingdom offers so much to do, the only problem I can find with it is that there’s simply too much to pack into one trip alone.
England’s capital, London, is truly mesmerizing. It is packed with world class attractions and is one of the financial capitals of the world. Whether it’s watching a football match at Wembley, or visiting Buckingham Palace, London never fails to deliver. Meanwhile, there’s plenty of iconic places to shop and various entertainment facilities too. One of the other great things about London is that, despite how much it has to boast, the relatively small space is easy to navigate. You’ll be able to get a lot done during your stay, but it still won’t cover everything.
Tip: To take a break from London craziness, head over to nearby Ireland. Ireland has been developing more of a tourist following over recent years. With gorgeous castles, stunning cliff views and numerous distilleries (Irish Whiskey Trail!), there is something for everyone.
Spain
Since this is the country I’ve been to most recently, I’ll let you read those posts separately to get a full picture of the wonders of this feisty country.
Until next time, XOXO!
