Hi all! I’m still recovering from the amazing time I had in Atlanta this past weekend! Quite a different pace of life from the busy, bustling streets of NYC, Atlanta’s low-key atmosphere, heavily centered around sprawling outside in the sun and dining, was the perfect weekend respite.
Atlanta has literally 71 streets with some form of the name “Peachtree” in it. Talk about confusing! Still, it’s a pretty name for a street. Unfortunately, it doesn’t mean that there are a million Peach trees lining the streets, but there is a huge park in the center of the city, Piedmont Park, where I spent a lot of time during my trip, and the city as a whole generally has a lot of greenery. I was pleasantly surprised by all the trees and nature I saw in the heart of the city.
To Do
Midtown, downtown and Buckhead are the areas of the city with the most things to do, each with their own unique feel. Downtown has all of the famous attractions, the World of Coca Cola (an amusement park/factory for Coca Cola where you can try over 100 flavors of soda that the company produces all over the world), the Georgia Aquarium, the Center for Civil and Human Rights and CNN’s headquarters (where you can tour the studio). Midtown is the home of Piedmont Park, and has tons of shops, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs (very popular nighttime activity in Atlanta). Buckhead is a little more suburban and a little more upscale, with lots of new developments (like Glow Dry, in case you need to get your hair did like I did!).
Architecturally, Atlanta is a mix of old school Victorian and southern style vs. urban and modern buildings. Atlanta also has an endless supply of outdoor spaces and rooftops, more so than most cities I’ve seen in the US. I definitely took advantage of this during the trip, eating and drinking outdoors as much as possible. The weather was warm and sunny over the weekend and people all over the city could be found on bikes and segways or just talking a leisurely stroll through the city.
Finally, for any of you Gone With the Wind fans, check out the Margaret Mitchell House!
To Eat
And of course, you can’t visit Atlanta without eating at least a little southern food!
A few other dining and drinking recs: Buttermilk Kitchen in Buckhead for southern food (brunch in particular), Fox Bros. BBQ, Park Tavern for dining and drinking (outdoors or indoors) with a view of Piedmont Park, and Bacchanalia for fine dining.
Until next time! xoxo
