The Phi Phi islands are off the coast of southern Thailand. Their claim to fame is the filming of the movie, “The Beach” with Leonardo DiCaprio, on Maya Bay, one of the two bays among these islands. Of course, that kind of advertisement is completely unnecessary for this gorgeous group of islands, with pristine beaches and crystal blue waters, full of fishes and other sea life. There are multiple ways to get here from Thailand’s coast – I took the route from Phuket, which is where I stayed for a few days, and arranged for a day trip to these islands. Day trips are easy to find, these islands are in high demand.
Tip: There are different boats of varying sizes and speeds that can take you here, depending on how much you are willing to pay. Trip organizers will try and hook you at the airport with the promise of free taxi rides, etc., which are a perfectly acceptable option, but note that they arrange trips on huge, slower boats.
The above picture captures Thai fishermen hard at work off the island of Ko Phi Phi Don, the largest of the group of islands.
